Letterpress begins by creating customized polymer plates with the text and graphics of a specific design.
Polymer plate used for ‘Brocade Border’ and close-ups of a Heidelberg press.
Once the custom-made polymer plates are ready, paper is hand-fed carefully into the press, and intense pressure rolls ink onto the plates, one color at a time. The resulting image is pressed into the paper, giving text and design elements a visible, tactile impression, which varies depending on the thickness of the paper.
The authentic, handcrafted look of letterpress is due in part to the subtle uneven characteristic of the ink pressing onto the paper. Letterpress produces vintage-quality color depth and richness, sometimes to dramatic effect, especially on plush, thick cotton papers.
